RENATA batteries use a non-aqueous, aprotic organic electrolyte containing lithium perchlorate in a mixed organic solvent. The active cathode material consists of a specially prepared, heat treated mixture of electrolytic MnO2 and other specific components and yields an outstanding volume/capacity ratio for this Li/MnO2 system.

The cell reactions for this system are:
Anode:  Li < Li+ + e

Cathode:  MnIVO2 + Li+ + e < MnIIIO2 (Li+)

Complete cell:  Li + MnIVO2 < MnIIIO2 (Li+)

Note: Manganese dioxide is reduced from the tetravalent to the trivalent state by lithium.

The separator in RENATA batteries is a double layer system consisting of a non-woven polypropylene cloth with a microporous polypropylene film which offers the best performance regarding mechanical strength, ion permeability over a wide temperature range (-40 to +100 °C) and a low self discharge rate.

Construction of RENATA Li/MnO2 button cells

RENATA Li/MnO2 cells have an incorporated Double Separator system which reduces the self discharge. This feature provides a better performance for long life applications (back-up etc.)
